How many Llamas?

Post  Jayne on Wed Aug 04, 2010 10:24 am

What is the best size of herd? Are Llamas happy in pairs, small groups or large herds/flocks?
Just out of interest what is the collective name for a group of llamas?
Thanks,
Jayne

I think Llamas are happiest in group situations- the size of the group obviously depends on the amount of land you have and the sexes of the llamas in that group.
We have a male living with two females for most of the time which works well for us.

I had two llamas until recently and now have four. One of my original pair is fairly controlling and his 'job' has become harder now that he has three llamas to control. The less dominant one seems to have gained by the two newcomers because he now has a pair of friendly llamas with which to graze.

Of course, I can't really say that one has gained and one has 'lost' because that's a human viewpoint, but that's how it seems to me.
